The Sonitpur district administration hosted a grand Republic Day celebration at Church Field, Tezpur. Shri Pijush Hazarika, Hon’ble Minister of Information, Public Relations, Printing & Stationery, Water Resources, and Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of Assam, attended the event as the Chief Guest.

The festivities began with the Hon’ble Minister unfurling the Tiranga and inspecting the Guard of Honour. Earlier in the day, he paid floral tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at the bust located in the District Commissioner’s office premises.

As part of the celebration, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Sonitpur, in collaboration with Edupur Society, Tezpur, presented engaging tableau performances to promote community awareness about disaster preparedness and resilience. The presentation focused on two critical disaster scenarios: earthquakes and fires. It demonstrated key actions to take during an earthquake, such as seeking shelter under a table, and highlighted ways to assist victims afterward. Additionally, it depicted the swift response of a fire brigade extinguishing a sudden fire in a hotel, emphasizing the importance of emergency readiness.

Aligned with the theme of youth empowerment for a secure future, the initiative is supported by NCC (National Cadet Corps), NSS (National Service Scheme), and Scout & Guide teams, symbolizing collective effort towards resilience. The demonstration is further bolstered by the active participation of the SDRF (State Disaster Response Force) and Civil Defence departments. Various disaster management tools, such as life jackets, life belts, and fire-safety suits, are displayed to emphasize preparedness and response during emergencies.
